Inclusion Center (completed)

The Inclusion Centre Project is an initiation launched on June 2017 with the support of Choose Love organization. The purpose of the project is to provide all the necessary assistance to newcomers and local population that are in the risk of social exclusion.

Since the creation of OMNES, it is understood that the needs of the newcomer population are going beyond a safe settlement in a modern apartment that can guarantee all these basic conditions that are recognized as the minimum level of living in European society. In addition, the socio-economic crisis that struck Greece emerged from the structural difficulty of the state to prevent the consequences of the crisis upon the vulnerable population in total. Even more specifically the region of our base, Kilkis Prefecture, during the late period faced these new challenges combined, without being in capacity to absorb the fallout of the shock.

The lack of adequate structure of welfare combined with the scarce funds to implement any protective program for the vulnerable population by the state, the limited experience by the local civil society and the extend size of the so called refugee crisis that the area of Kilkis faced, proved that a social inclusion program is an immediate necessity in order to avoid the further deconstruction of the local society.

The Inclusion Project, part of which is the Inclusion Centre was designed in order to support the local community and to build up new social connections. The Inclusion Centre is the core of this initiative. Is the physical space of the Project where the concept, planning and implementation of the Project is taking place.

Greek lessons

Special emphasis is given to learning the Greek language, which being the language of the host country is a priority in order for refugees and migrants to become autonomous, to feel empowered to respond to the daily needs of communication, and finally to be able to integrate smoothly into the Greek reality. The classes in the Inclusion Center are graded and focus on the needs of students: a) adolescents over 16 years old who choose not to attend formal education, and b) adults for whom inclusion in formal education is not provided are all eligible to participate.

For adolescents aged 12-18, who regularly attend the morning public schools in Kilkis, the Inclusion Center offers remedial classes not only for modern Greek, but also for the rest of the basic school subjects (i.e. ancient Greek language, Mathematics, Science). The lessons aim at participants’ educational empowerment, the development of their self-confidence, and their smooth adaptation to the new situation.

English lessons

As the need for knowledge of English is imperative today, the Inclusion Center provides graded language learning classes (beginners -> advanced). The English language courses mainly aspire to enhance communication skills and develop the production of spoken and written language based on possible everyday and/or professional needs. Through a variety of exercises (e.g. oral sessions, audio sessions, video sessions) that combine the acquisition of varied vocabulary and diverse grammatical structures, participants in the classes become familiar with the correct use of the English language and develop their receptive and productive  skills so as to be able to cope effectively with daily challenges.

Computer lessons

At the Inclusion Center, an IT lab has been set up in order to conduct courses for  participants who wish to enhance their computer literacy, to cover their personal needs, and to activate paths for integration into the labor market.

Participants of younger age are taught the basic use of computers, the use of applications that facilitate their school performance (e.g. to do their homework), and learn education programs such as Scratch or Lego which improve their creativity.

Computer exams

As part of computer science courses, students have the opportunity to take part in certification exams. To date, 55% of those taking the VELLUM International Diploma in IT Skills exam have successfully passed all the modules and obtained the certificate, 92.6% have succeeded in one module, 76% have succeeded in two modules, while only 7.4% failed completely.

The Inclusion Center offers a variety of cultural, educational, and social activities in order to improve the living conditions of the refugee/migrant population and support their sociocultural integration. At the same time, the Inclusion Center bridges the potential gaps by strengthening intercultural perception and by enhancing understanding both between different refugee/migrant  populations as well as between refugees/migrants and the local community.

Specifically:

  • Informative meetings are held for all the beneficiaries with a view to acquainting them with the social and cultural life of Kilkis as well as that of Greece in general.

  • Activities related to democratic civic education and human rights are organized in accordance with the European values.

  • Cultural, educational and diverse creative activities are designed and conducted in the Inclusion Center, in the wider area of Kilkis and in the surrounding areas.

  • The social interaction among all participants is promoted.

  • The development and maintenance of strong relations between the local community and the refugee/migrant populations are targeted.
